Nutrition and Fertility

You have made one of the most life-altering decisions- to have a baby. This is an exciting time as you daydream about what your pregnancy will feel and look like. You may start to make changes to your diet and other lifestyle behaviors in order to pave the way for a healthy pregnancy. For many women, this wondrous process of conception seemingly occurs without a glitch. For others, the process of conceiving becomes just that, a difficult and uncertain journey.

One might think that the moon, the stars, and the sun would need to be in perfect alignment for conception to occur as it consists of a complicated and intricate series of events. It is also time-dependent; one egg is released each month and has roughly 12 to 24 hours to live and become fertilized. With tight deadlines like these, it is a miracle that any one gets pregnant! Fortunately, sperm can live up to five days in good quality cervical fluid, and conception is possible during this time. Ideally, you should have intercourse three days before, and three days following ovulation. This will insure that there are sperm present when the egg is released.

Peak fertility in women occurs before age 30, with a monthly pregnancy rate of 20-25 percent and sharply declines beginning in the late 30's and early 40's. Approximately one in three women experience infertility by age 40, mainly due to poor egg quality which can result in impaired fertilization, reduced implantation, and increased miscarriage. Age aside; there are other factors which are thought to impact fertility. Compelling research points to environmental contaminants such as pesticides, synthetic hormones, and dioxin and PCP emissions from burning plastics; all thought to be endocrine disrupters. For some women, diet may affect their odds for pregnancy.

Women who experience infertility from ovulatory disorders often conceive after making diet and lifestyle changes. Ovulatory disorders, which accounts for 25 percent of all cases of infertility, are related to problems with egg maturation and release during a woman’s cycle. Studies have shown that women, who regularly consume diets high in refined carbohydrates and simple sugars, are more likely to experience insulin resistance. High levels of insulin cause weight gain, hormone imbalance, and a disruption in ovulation. If you have an ovulatory disorder, or simply want to eat nutritiously to support a healthy pregnancy, schedule an appointment with one of our dietitians with Mindful Nutrition Counseling. Our dietitians understand the relationship between optimal nutrition and fertility, and can help get you on the road to better health.
