Disordered Eating Behaviors & Eating Disorders

If you or a loved one is struggling with food acceptance, disturbances in eating behavior, or excessive concern about body image or weight, you are not alone. A recent survey from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that almost 65 percent of American women report disordered eating behaviors. Additionally, 10 percent report symptoms consistent with anorexia or bulimia nervosa, or eating disorders not otherwise specified (NOS) such as binge eating.

Eating disorders are a complex product of biologic, cultural, and psychosocial factors. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, as well as, disordered eating behaviors are more commonly seen in females and they don’t discriminate on the basis on culture or ethnicity. Disturbances in eating behavior affect women of all ages. The numbers of women in their 30’s and 40’s who struggle with their eating and body image follow closely behind younger women who engage in similar, unhealthy behaviors. Disordered eating can also affect males. According to the web site, www.something-fishy.org, it is estimated that up to 10 percent of the eight million people in the United States who suffer from disordered eating, are males.

The dietitians at Mindful Nutrition Counseling teach the skill of mastering internally regulated, hunger-driven eating. We will give you the necessary tools to tap into the wisdom of your body to help you normalize your eating behavior. We work with clients who have been diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and disordered eating, NOS.

The successful treatment of eating disorders generally depends on psychological, medical, and nutritional support. Although not necessary at the time of your appointment, we suggest that you are in treatment with a therapist or counselor who has experience in the treatment of eating disorders. We can also provide you with a list of therapists in your area. If you are obsessing about your weight, eating or exercise behaviors, you are not alone. Contact Mindful Nutrition Counseling so we can help you get back on the road to recovery and good health.
