Top 10 FAQs of Mindful Nutrition Counseling

  1. Why should I make an appointment to see a Registered Dietitian?

Registered Dietitians are the food and nutrition experts, translating the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living. The expertise, training and credentials of a registered dietitian, help you to separate facts from fads and translate nutritional science into information that you can use. Our RDs can assist you with any chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure or cardiovascular problems, as well as healthy nutrition throughout pregnancy, pre- and post-menopause, eating disorders, and sports nutrition (among other concerns).

  2. What areas of nutrition and health education do you concentrate in?

We specialize in the areas of nutrition and hormones, including fertility, pregnancy, peri-menopause and post- menopause, and weight management. We also provide nutrition education for women who have chronic health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Our dietitians have considerable experience in the areas of disordered eating, sports nutrition, and food allergies and intolerances.

  3. I am five weeks pregnant and confused about what I should be eating and if I should be taking supplements. How do I know if I am eating healthfully for my developing baby?

We would be very happy to take the time with you to answer all of your questions and to put your mind at ease! We will consider what may be best for you based on your body, lifestyle, and specific needs. The earlier we can address your questions or concerns, the better the outcome for you and your baby.

  4. How do I set up an appointment? Is Chicago, IL you’re only office location?

Call Mindful Nutrition Counseling at (773) 539-8181 to set up a nutrition consultation at our home office or at one of our partnering physician’s offices ( see map and locations). If you’d like us to come to your physician’s office, please recommend our website to your doctor. We are currently expanding our nutrition practice throughout the Chicago-land area and northwestern suburbs for your convenience.

  5. Does Mindful Nutrition Counseling accept private insurance such as Blue Cross Blue Shield or Medicare?

We are not a provider with private insurance companies or Medicare. However we fill out Medical Nutrition Therapy forms for you to submit to your insurance company and are happy to supply any additional information that may be requested. Your insurance company will reimburse you directly if nutrition services are covered. Employee insurance plans vary, and reimbursement may be full or partial, and are not always guaranteed.

  6. What should I bring to my appointment?

We request that you bring in a three to four day food journal including approximate amounts of everything you’ve been eating and drinking. Include one or two weekend days, if possible.

Additional helpful items you may bring include:
    • Copies of recent blood work
    • The name and dosage of all medications, herbal supplements, or vitamin and mineral supplements that you are currently taking, or considering taking.
    • Any questions that you have.
    • Food labels or food items that you may have questions or concerns about.

  7. How long will my appointment last?

Initial consults last approximately one to one and a half hours; each session is unique to your needs and circumstances.
Please see: At Your Initial Consultation for additional details

  8. Will you just provide me with a diet plan to follow?

Rather than just handing you a “one-size-fits-all” diet we prefer to individualize your nutrition program according to your work and personal schedule, time limitations, priorities, and goals. We invite you to bring a significant other or friend who will support you in achieving your goals .

  9. How often do I see the dietitian for follow-up?

Follow-up appointments are based on your specific needs. Most clients prefer making an appointment every two to three weeks for guidance and support while others prefer to check in every few months. More frequent appointments often assist in maintaining your accountability and progress in attaining personal goals for the long-term. Because everyone’s needs are truly unique, our dietitians prefer to set a follow-up appointment at the time most appropriate for you.

  10. Can my husband or roommate come to the appointment and be assessed, as well?

Yes we are pleased to provide consultations to your family or friends. Group rates will apply, so plan for an extended appointment. We can discuss your goals both individually and as a couple or group.
